A Chance Encounter with... Him... Pt 6

I desperately follow the floating object.  Running through trees and bushes, hearing the crashing noises and unnerving screams behind me.  Suddenly, the object falls to the ground at the base of a hill.  I grab it and throw it in the air again, but it just falls back down to the same spot each time.  Not sure what was going on and hearing the noises behind me getting close, I grab the object and dash around for somewhere to hide.

That's when it happened.  I'm not sure what triggered it, but the next moment I was watching a tree being pushed over as those eyes appear around the trunk when suddenly, I'm falling.  After what seemed like an eternity, I hit the ground, hard.  A loud crack echos around the walls as I land on the stone floor.  I scream as the pain of the broken leg takes over.  I take off my backpack and scramble for a torch.  Fumbling with the flint and steel in the darkness of the cavern, and the pain of the broken leg, I hadn't noticed the object glowing again.

As I get the torch lit, I hear the screaming again.  I quickly scramble up to my feet and fall hard to the nearby wall, forgetting about my broken leg.  That's when I notice the object begin rolling down the floor.  I watch as it rolls around the corner, out of sight.  Before I can decide if I should follow the object, the decision is made for me as I hear the scream, louder than ever.

I hobble against the wall as I follow the object. Deeper and deeper into the maze of stone hallways.  Past iron doors and cages of rooms filled with bones.  In my haste to follow the object, I failed to see a lone stone brick on the floor.  I slip on it and fall to the floor, and down some stairs.  I must have hit my head, because when I opened my eyes, it was throbbing.  I slowly get up and try to get my bearings.

As soon as I spot the object, I hear the screaming behind me, from around the corner.  Suddenly, I see the eyes again.  I turn and dash towards the object, which had rolled into a brightly lit room, a room lit by lava.  I stumble up the steps in front of me to see, well, I don't really know what I see.  All I can make out is blackness in this ring of objects.  A crashing sound turns my attention away to what's behind me.  I see.. him.  Feeling a fear I haven't never felt before, I look into his eyes.

Stories told to me as a kid, stories I thought that were told to kits to get them to go to sleep, flash through my mind.  I notice his gaze shift to the object in my hand and he takes a step forward.  A blaze haze begins to form behind him as he moves forward, slowly moving forward.  As his hand reaches out for me, something happened!

"Wha.. wha... what happened Grandpa!?" shouts the little girl at my feet.  "What?  Oh, what happens next you ask?" I ask, looking at the little girl at my feet.  She looks up at me with feareful eyes, "yes Grandpa!  That's what I asked!"  I smile into those innocent eyes.  "Haha, young one.  The store is far too scare to continue.  Perhaps I'll tell you the rest when you're older."  The boy, the girl's brother looks around, shaking.  "But... but... mom and dad said the boogeyman doesn't exist!"

I smile as I lean forward "Ahh, but he does exist!  I have seen him myself!  Though, you don't have to worry.  It is said he only comes out when his treasure has been taken."  "But you stole the treasure, Grandpa!" both the little kids shout as they look around nervously.  "That was ages ago young ones, though I may have the treasure, he has not haunted me since..." my sentence trails off as the wind outside cottage blows, and I hear a faint sound.  A sound all too familiar.

I recoil from the object.  Terrified, it takes me a few moments to look at my hand.  The large gash was gone!  My hand was completely healed!  I slowly get to my feet as I hear a loud bang behind me.  I quickly turn around to see a figure.  Even in the dark night, I can see it, I know it's intentions.  It's after me!

I turn and quickly grab my backpack from the chest and strap on my sword.  I grab the object from the floor and burst through the front door.  Just as I enter the forest, I hear crashing noises.  I quickly look behind me as I see my cabin, the one I built with my hands, fly apart!  "Oh.. no..." I moan as I spot the figure, and those eyes.  Those eyes turn right at me and stare.  I'm paralyzed with fear as I stare into those eyes.

The wind knocks loose an apple from a nearby tree that hits me in the temple.  I groan and shake my head to clear the stars from my vision.  I don't see the eyes, where did they go!?  "Get away from me!" I shout and throw the object away.  I see it once again fly off into the air and hear a scream behind me.  Not even thinking, I follow the floating object...

A Chance Encounter with... Him... Pt 4

Not really sure what the object is, I had found it during my last trip in the nearby abandoned mine.  I had spotted inside a dungeon.  It about three hours to clear all the monsters from the area as well as clearing the rubble around the object.  I wasn't really sure why it attracted my attention, but it didn't really matter at the time.  I had tossed it into my mine cart with the rest of my haul, not even giving it a second thought.

Well, I'm thinking about it now.  A few drops of my blood had landed on the object, and it was glowing an unnatural greenish-blue.  As I watched it, I realized just how much it looked like an eye.  I heard that unnatural moan again, without thinking, I kicked the object.  It shot up into the air a ways, and floated there, inside the cabin.

I stared blankly at it.  As suddenly as it shot into the air, it fell to the ground, no longer glowing.  I was drawn to this object, regardless of the fear I felt.  "This thing... this object... it's not natural..." I stutter.  I watch in horror as my injured hand is drawn to the object.  Unable to stop myself, I grab it.  As I do, I see those soulless eyes again...

I take the fish off of the fire and take to the cupboard.  I sprinkle a few crushed herbs onto the fish and sit back down in my chair.  I nervously eat, keeping my eyes wandering across the cabin for any more disturbances.  I clean the cabin up some after my tasty dinner, my nerves settled now.  I easy back into my chair and grab my book.

After a few minutes of reading, the book falls from my hand.  Not from fright, but from exhaustion.  Not really sure how much time passed, but I awoke to the howling wind.  The first thing I notice is that it's almost pitch-black.  All the torches and fireplace had gone out.  "What the..?  Why are my torches out?"  I get up from my chair and stumble towards my chest of tools.  Fumbling for my flint and steel, I slice my hand on an axe.  "Ahh, that smarts." I groan.

I continue fumbling and eventually find the flint and steel.  After three strikes, the first torch sparks to life.  I set the flint and steel down as I look for a cloth to bind my injured hand.  Bleeding rather profusely, I don't notice the trail of blood on the floor.  I trip over something and fall hard to the floor.  My search for a bandage is lost as I stare at the object I tripped over...

A Chance Encounter with... Him... Pt 2

I jump, probably as high as the ceiling, but I'm not sure.  I let out a gulp as I stare at the door.  Knees shaking, heart racing, beads of sweat forming on my brow again.  "I.. I... I... is.... is someone.... there...?" I stutter at the door.  No response.  I gulp again as I slowly move towards the door.  Each step painfully loud as the wooden floor creaks.

My hand slowly moves toward the latch on the door, easing it open, being as quite as possible.  I gulp again as I swing the door open to... nothing.  I grab a nearby torch and step out onto the porch.  I look around as the wind blows by.  Not seeing what could have made the noise, I step back into my cabin.  I place the torch back into it's holder near the door.  I close and latch it as I let out a sigh of relief.  "The wind, must have been the wind."

Chuckling to myself for being scared so easily, I casually turn around, and freeze.  All I notice is the eyes of a disembodied head floating in front of me.  White, soulless eyes.  I couldn't tell you if they floated there for a second or for an hour, it seemed like an eternity to me.  Another pop from the fire causes me to jump... again.  As I desperately try to slow the beating of my heart, I look again, but don't see the head, or those eyes.  "Good, I don't want to see them again!" I shout as I walk over to the fire...

A Chance Encounter with... Him... Pt 1

The day started off like any other.  It was a brisk, cool morning in Fall.  The harvest had been good this season and my spirits were high.  I complete my morning stretch routine and walk down the gravel road to the animal pens.  I can hear the groan of a burning zombie in the distance, racing to find shelter from the morning sun.  As I round the corner of my house, I hear a light noise from behind me, and that all too familiar hiss.

I dash forward and roll.  Leaping to my feet with a spin, I draw my sword from it's sheath and point it towards the Creeper.  It scowls and hisses at me as I calmly and slowly walk backwards.  It's glaring eyes staring at me with hatred as it follows.  Before either of us makes a move, I hear a swish sound as an arrow flies by my ear and embed itself into the Creeper.  No longer concerned with me, it dashes off towards the skeleton archer that attacked it accidentally.  I give a sigh as I sheath my sword.

The rest of the day proceeds uneventful, completing my daily tasks of feeding the animals, exploring a nearby abandoned mine, harvesting raw ore for processing into new tools.  The trouble began as the setting sun peaked over the nearby mountain range.  An unnatural breeze blew by, carrying with it an unsettling moan.  A kind of moan that is only spoken in the quiet corners of a pub, or at camp fire horror stories.

To say I was nervous was an understatement.  My knees started shaking as beads of sweat appeared on my brow.  "Woah, get a hold of yourself, Steve."  I let out a deep sigh and regain my composure.  I look at the nearby mountains, but don't spot anything.  I walk into my cabin to prepare dinner.  My nerves still on edge as I coax my fireplace back to life.  I skewer a fish and place it over the fire.  The smell of the fish roasting calms me.  I sit back in a chair and open a nearby book.

I quickly drop it as that moan rustles through the trees.  My knuckles white as a deep fear takes over and I grip the arms of the chair hard enough to leave a tiny indent.  A snap from the fireplace startles me.  I slowly my breath and wipe the beads of sweat from my brow.  I calm my racing heart as I head to the fireplace.  As I look the fish over, there is a bang at the door...
